The GPT-6 family grows: gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-luna, gpt-6.1-sol land in the official SDKs
Verified 2026-10-09: openai-python and openai-node enums both list gpt-6-astra, gpt-6.1-sol, gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-luna; official RSS positions Sol/Luna and GPT-6.1 Sol. Only SDK- and same-day-RSS-verifiable facts are asserted.
Between late September and early October 2026 the GPT-6 family grew in a visible way: the type enums of both official SDKs, openai-python and openai-node, now carry three new model IDs alongside gpt-6-astra — gpt-6.1-sol, gpt-6-sol, and gpt-6-luna — and OpenAI's official news RSS published the matching announcement entries in the same window. This article states exactly two kinds of things: type-level facts you can point at in the SDK source, and the verbatim wording of the official RSS as refetched by this site on 2026-10-09. Everything else — absolute pricing, tier availability, product detail — is left unstated.
1. The type level: four GPT-6 IDs side by side
On 2026-10-09 this site checked the main branches of both SDKs. The first four entries of openai-python's ChatModel enum, in src/openai/types/shared/chat_model.py:
"gpt-6-astra",
"gpt-6.1-sol",
"gpt-6-sol",
"gpt-6-luna",
Immediately after them come the gpt-5.6-sol / terra / luna trio. openai-node's model literal union, in src/resources/shared.ts, carries the same four IDs. Both reproduce with one command each:
curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openai/openai-python/main/src/openai/types/shared/chat_model.py | head -40
curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openai/openai-node/main/src/resources/shared.ts | grep -n "gpt-6"
The latest releases on the verification day were openai-python v3.26.1 (published 2026-10-08) and openai-node v7.31.0 (published 2026-10-09), per the same-day GitHub releases lists. This article does not claim which release "first" introduced the three IDs — that would require tag-by-tag comparison, which was not done; every state claim is anchored to the main branches as of 2026-10-09.
2. The official wording: Sol and Luna (2026-09-22)
OpenAI's official news RSS carried the entry "Introducing GPT-6 Sol and Luna" on 2026-09-22. Description, verbatim, as refetched by this site on 2026-10-09:
Meet GPT-6 Sol and Luna, two models that bring frontier intelligence to everyday work with different balances of capability and cost.
Which of the two leans capability and which leans cost, the official description does not say — this article does not guess. The entry carried no pricing or availability information.
3. GPT-6.1 Sol: the official description and the one-fifth price wording (2026-09-29)
On September 29 the RSS entry "Introducing GPT-6.1 Sol" described, verbatim:
Meet GPT-6.1 Sol: near-Astra intelligence for coding, computer use, and professional work at one-fifth of Astra’s standard API input and output token prices.
Three quotable official facts: the positioning is near-Astra intelligence; the target work is coding, computer use, and professional work; and the standard API input and output token prices are one-fifth of Astra's. Note that this is a relative statement — absolute prices for either model appeared in none of the same-day loadable channels (SDK source, RSS, GitHub), and this site does not publish unverified numbers. gpt-6-astra's pricing remains unverified for the same reason (see "gpt-6-astra appears in the OpenAI SDK: the new ChatModel ID and the Safety Alerts API"); the two unverified states are a continuation of each other.
4. The ChatGPT side of the same window: dots and GPT-6 with Intelligent UI
The same RSS window carried two more announcements tied to the GPT-6 ecosystem, both quoted from the RSS as refetched on 2026-10-09:
- dots (2026-09-29): "Dots by OpenAI are proactive assistants that can keep working across complex projects and everyday tasks. Learn how dots help you stay in control while work moves forward."
- GPT-6 + Intelligent UI (2026-10-07): "GPT‑6 is rolling out globally in ChatGPT with Intelligent UI, delivering faster responses with visuals and interactive experiences you can explore and use directly."
The product pages for both (openai.com/index/ paths) returned 403 for this site on the verification day, so their bodies could not be loaded — tiers, pricing, and rollout scope are unknown, and this article asserts nothing beyond the RSS wording.
5. Relation to the existing family: only what can be pointed at
Set against this site's existing records, three relations can be pointed at. First, the enum order: the four GPT-6 IDs sit adjacent in both packages, gpt-6-astra first. Second, the official RSS itself compares GPT-6.1 Sol's intelligence to Astra ("near-Astra") — that is an official statement of the relationship. Third, the earlier Codex migration guidance mapped roles for the 5.6-to-6.0 transition ("Sol to Astra, retain Terra for balanced work and Luna as the primary faster or cheaper model") — whether that naming semantics carries into the 6.x family, OpenAI has not said, and this article draws no equivalence the source never drew.
| Model ID | Type level (2026-10-09) | Official description source | Pricing wording |
|---|---|---|---|
| gpt-6-astra | Both enums, listed first | Codex migration guide (2026-09) calls it the most intelligent model yet | Unverified |
| gpt-6.1-sol | Both enums, listed second | RSS 2026-09-29: near-Astra intelligence | Official relative wording: one-fifth of Astra's standard prices |
| gpt-6-sol | Both enums, listed third | RSS 2026-09-22: frontier intelligence for everyday work | RSS silent |
| gpt-6-luna | Both enums, listed fourth | RSS 2026-09-22: announced alongside Sol | RSS silent |
6. Common errors and troubleshooting
Readers reproducing this check may hit two situations. First, raw.githubusercontent.com occasionally returns a 5xx — retry; the domain loaded repeatedly on the verification day. Second, do not read enum presence as immediate callability — a type enum only means the SDK recognizes the string, not that the API serves the model to your account; your own API response is the referee. Note also that openai-python and openai-node version numbers do not map one-to-one (the same API change lands in different versions per package) — state and check them per package.

Key points
- Verified 2026-10-09: the first four entries of the ChatModel enum in openai-python main, src/openai/types/shared/chat_model.py, are gpt-6-astra, gpt-6.1-sol, gpt-6-sol, gpt-6-luna — followed by the gpt-5.6-sol / terra / luna trio; reproducible on raw.githubusercontent.com
- openai-node main, src/resources/shared.ts, carries the same four IDs in its model literal union — both packages checked the same day
- Latest releases on the verification day: openai-python v3.26.1 (published 2026-10-08) and openai-node v7.31.0 (published 2026-10-09), per the same-day GitHub releases lists
- OpenAI's official news RSS (refetched by this site 2026-10-09) on GPT-6 Sol and Luna, verbatim: two models that bring frontier intelligence to everyday work with different balances of capability and cost (2026-09-22 entry)
- RSS on GPT-6.1 Sol, verbatim: near-Astra intelligence for coding, computer use, and professional work at one-fifth of Astra’s standard API input and output token prices (2026-09-29 entry) — an official relative-price statement; absolute prices appeared in no loadable channel that day
- The same RSS window (2026-09-29, 2026-10-07) announced dots — proactive assistants that can keep working across complex projects and everyday tasks — and GPT-6 rolling out globally in ChatGPT with Intelligent UI, delivering faster responses with visuals and interactive experiences; both product pages 403'd for this site that day, so tiers, pricing, and availability are left unstated
